the bad ass dirtbombs

The Dirtbombs - Underdog
The Dirtbombs - Kung Fu
-both tracks from Ultraglide in Black (In the Red, 2008)
"Ultraglide in Black" just sounds like a really bad ass name for an album. And then there's the cover art. Luckily, the music within doesn't disappoint. It completely kicked my ass.
I decided to check out the Dirtbombs after hearing their cover of "Chains of Love" earlier this summer. Ultraglide seemed like the most obvious place to start. The two songs that have me the most floored are "Underdog" and especially "Kung Fu", which is a great six minutes of super slick, no-holds-barred funk. Of course, these guys didn't write these songs--that credit goes to Mr. Sly Stone and Mr. Curtis Mayfield, respectively--but they totally make them their own with their scuzzed-up guitars and godly rhythm section.

And speaking of things bad ass, I just came across this track from Ghislain Poirier's upcoming mixtape with Face-T. Poirier jacked the deadliest part of the beat from this track here, Kid Cudi's "Day 'N' Night (Crookers Remix)", and makes it knock that much harder, mostly through unrelenting repetition.
